From powder snow to mountain trails – whether skiing or mountain biking: every season comes with its own risks

Which injuries typically occur in winter and which in summer?

At the Dolomiti Sportclinic, we treat sports-related and everyday injuries all year round – but the types of injuries we see vary significantly with the seasons.

We asked Dr. Robert Barbetta, specialist in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Dolomiti Sportclinic, which injuries are most common in winter:
“Typical ski injuries include tibial plateau fractures, ACL tears or dislocated shoulders after falls, but wrist and ankle fractures are also frequent. Alpine skiing involves high speeds and immense forces – which can result in complex and severe injuries to both the upper and lower limbs.”

And what about summer – what does the focus shift to?
“Mountain biking accidents, climbing injuries or overuse syndromes caused by hiking, trail running or team sports often bring patients to us in summer. Ankle injuries and contusions after road cycling or e-bike crashes are also common,” explains Dr. Barbetta, and adds:
“We’re also increasingly treating open, contaminated wounds with tendon injuries after bike crashes – especially off-road. Paragliding, on the other hand, occasionally leads to more serious injuries to the lower leg or ankle, usually caused by hard landings.”

Whether it’s summer or winter – we are prepared for everything.
With a highly specialized team, state-of-the-art diagnostics, and personalized care, we make sure our patients get back in motion as quickly as possible.
